I'll be honest. I wasn't looking forward to seeing this. It seemed like a poor way of trying to take a common childhood game/toy and modernizing/maturing it (cough Transformers cough). It looked like a stupid idea.
Boy, was I wrong.
The movie, while having superb special effects, had a cast of wonderfully interesting characters, a decent story, great references, and even a nice dose of comedy, really impressed me in the way it handled the source material. Instead of the aforementioned Michael Bay film, this one wasn't trying to be a mature version of what it was based on. It had elements of it, and just enough as to not be overboard. combine that with the previously mentioned perks, and you have yourself a hell of an unexpected movie. It had its ridiculous moments, sure, but all in all, it was really well done in the way that it presented itself.

I'm gonna be honest here. I saw it expecting a film that would at least be fun to watch friends, I ended up thinking the exact opposite of your thoughts. The characters were shallow and 2 dimensional, the CGI was annoying, it was never really funny. I am ashamed to have watched this.
